SoundUp with Opera North 2019

Updated: Nov 17, 2019

We are delighted to have been recommissioned to present our opera workshops for a second year as part of our Access All Arts work.

This time we are working in partnership with Opera North, and our 4 workshops are based on the three productions being put on in the Autumn Season; La Boheme, Giulio Cesare and The Greek Passion.

This year we are taking our workshops out to two locations in Manchester, we are returning for a second year to Belong Morris Feinmann in Didsbury and then taking the workshops to Limelight Community Centre in Hulme, so as to reach more people with dementia in the community.

Sixteen opera singers studying at the RNCM have volunteered to take part as music facilitators and performers in the project. They each received specialised music facilitation for dementia training in advance of the project. Feedback from the training was wonderfully positive, with all singers expressing that the training developed their understanding of dementia and gave them valuable insight into the power of music as a tool for expression, communication and joy in workshop contexts. They all reflected that they felt more prepared for the workshops, with a greater understanding of participatory arts practice and the tools they can use to make their facilitation of music more engaging, empowering and effective for people living with dementia.

For more details on our training see our training information page.

The project in numbers:

- 5 hours of pre-workshop artist training and development

- 8 participatory music workshops

- 2 community locations

- 5 community organisation partners

- 16 early career singers involved

- +50 participants living with dementia, carers and care staff reached

We would like to thank our community partners for their support in making this project series happen:

Opera North, The Royal Northern College of Music, The Lowry and Together Dementia Support.

Our first workshop will be on Thursday the 24th of October! Keep up to date with the workshops from week to week on our blog and the SoundUp Instagram account.
